Tropical Storm Watch for Pensacola-ish
It's hurricane season and you know what that means - every bed-wetting jackass is a fucking weatherman! We are officially at the high point of hurricane season 2024. So far it is on track for being the least active hurricane season on record. Now, it could pick up and we always have to be on alert, but the "experts" were predicting 24 hurricanes and all kinds of craziness ("most active season ever") because of the "historically hot water."
Of course the climate change weirdos who want everyone to stop eating beef and ride trains were practically jizzing themselves at the thought of a devastating hurricane season during an election year. So far, none at all.
Right now at the high point of the season we have a tropical storm that is blossoming into a hurricane in the Gulf and looks to hit Louisiana as a Category 1 or 2. Not great, but not disastrous.
The Gulf is still warm (though after this rolls through it'll cool off and may not be able to warm up much with fall temperatures setting in), so storms can build. But the Atlantic is cooling off. They couldn't figure out why and then settled on "global warming" as the reason for the unusual Atlantic La Nina. I miss the days when idiots weren't trying to politicize the weather and we just said "thank you" when we got blessed with a mild storm season.
And I suppose it's worth pointing out that Obama and Biden have been in charge of things for 12 of the last 16 years, we've built all these stupid wind and solar farms, jacked up the price of gasoline and even shut the country down completely over a virus (because we're idiots) for almost a year. And despite all that, the weather is still the weather and this seems to really disappoint the climate weirdos when the weather is mild and arouse them when it's bad.
Point is, no, we don't control the weather. And whoever is in charge isn't going to be able to do shit about weather events. EXCEPT - if you happen to have a good governor, like Florida, the person in charge can do a great job on planning and recovery and get things running again with minimal disruption. A good governor and good disaster management DOES matter. So thank God for DeSantis.
But these idiots talking about climate change are full of shit. No, eating beef or not won't change the weather one bit. Neither will trains (really, WTF?), wind farms (which suck and actually CAUSE more pollution), solar farms (which also suck and destroy forest land), electric cars or any of that other BS. Why? Because it's the fucking WEATHER. Focus on things you can do something about. Which isn't much, because the government sucks at pretty much everything. So maybe just give people their money back and get out of the damn way and stop with the rain dance bullshit.
Anyhow, getting back to today and reality, it looks like some tropical stormish weather is going to graze my neck of the woods, which has the bed-wetters in the Panhandle ecstatically wetting themselves in joyful fear, because this is what they live for. They hyperventilate when there's a cold snap for a week and the lows get into the 20s at night. But this time there is a "tropical storm watch" for Alabama, which is right next to Escambia County, so that's basically us.
I'm not worried, because the cone is three states away, and a tropical storm is basically a lot of rain, but hey, it's real weather. I'm glad I didn't bother to put the trash cans in the garage when I left. It didn't look like anything major was going to happen in those three weeks and, even with this, that still looks like the case. But something interesting to look at.
Fish Storms Coming Next Week
Looking ahead, it's pretty quiet for the next week or two of this "high season." Looks like we'll get another hurricane and it'll go into the Atlantic and water the fish. And after that we have a situation where the Gulf area is getting cooler and that water temp is going to fall a lot. They've already had a couple cold fronts and they're due for the first fall cold snap.
Meanwhile, the Atlantic temperature is already dropping (which is why all the bed-wetters have been focusing on the Gulf, and with some good reason).
I'm not trying to diminish the importance of hurricane season. They can be disastrous. And even in a mild season it only takes one over your house to ruin your day. But I am going to make light of the Chicken Littles. There are FAR too many people online who freak out over every little raindrop or temperature change and expect the forecasters to tailor their forecast especially for them. It's more than annoying, it wastes bandwidth and takes attention away from what matters. When it comes to how to approach the storms, I look at my neighbors who have been through some things and go with what they're doing. The people who have been through this know when to worry and when not to worry and what to do. The people panicking online are mostly new residents in areas likely surrounded with other new residents, so they're completely unmoored and it shows.
There is one resource I particularly like when it comes to these things and that's "Mike's Weather Page." You can find him on Facebook and other places. His information is good, very thorough and he synthesizes a lot of information so he's usually pretty accurate. He's a storm chaser, so this is a hobby for him, but he's a reliable resource. The rest of the social media groups are garbage - a bunch of Chicken Littles and wannabes who either don't know the first thing or are just trolling for clicks.
At any rate, I stand by my decision to leave the trash cans out and fully expect them to be safe and upright when I return next week. At this point, it's looking like it's going to be a contest to see who is the most wildly off on their predictions, those who predicted "worst hurricane season ever," or those who predicted Florida State would make the college football playoffs. So far it's a tie, which is great news for those impacted by hurricanes and a disaster for Florida State fans.
As a Florida homeowner I guess I can live with that trade-off if I have to. But damn those Noles need to get their shit together.
