This was last week in Pensacola. That first full day, which was Tuesday the 17th, was the best surf fishing day I've had in Pensacola, and one of the best period. Fished Johnson Beach at the parking lost past the main lot. It was nonstop small jacks - on the jig and on the pompano rigs. Somewhere in the middle of that frenzy one of my poles went down and started getting dragged out. It was a HUGE pompano, it actually jumped out of the water at one point 16", the biggest one I've seen, it took up the whole cooler.
The bite cooled off and then the whiting picked up a little, so I added a few whiting on top. Just a really, really good day.
Saw my buddy Blaine Roberts at Panhandle Salt (https://panhandlesalt.com). He's got his tackle shop trailer set up. Bought a rig, said hello. Surprised he remembered me.
Kayak out of Navy Point wasn't as spectacular. Some really big grunts, a nice sailcat and a last-cast stingray, but no "target species." Still, an incredible day. Had a total of 29 fish, with the huge majority from the shore. It was a little much for the fillet table.
It was so nice to finally have one of those big days from the shore, and even more that I'm getting used to fishing with the jig and having success. And the beach is always nice - enjoy the sun, sand and running around on the beach, talking to people. It feels good. It's my home here and it's nice when that "home" is producing!
