Triple-Title Showdown: Is Chloe Watson vs. Nicola Hopewell Now The Fight To Make?
Before her upset points decision defeat to the impressive Jasmina Zapotoczna on Saturday night, Maisey Rose Courtney was expected to face Chloe Watson for the European flyweight title in September. A fight seemingly locked in. But with Courtney losing her unbeaten record to Zapotoczna, that expected shot at Watson's European bauble looks set to be lost with it.
Courtney will probably seek revenge over Zapotoczna, and that will, in all probability, leave Watson seeking a new opponent for later this year. But if Zapotoczna is free to pursue fresh opportunities elsewhere, Zapotoczna could very well replace Courtney in that European title fight later this summer.
But if Zapotoczna and Courtney do indeed run it back, that could leave the door open for a possible double-title showdown between Watson and Nicola Hopewell, with the Worksop fighters Commonwealth title on the line as well. This observer has been a big advocate for a British title to be created for the flyweight ranks. A Watson/Hopewell fight would be a very good place to start. A big domestic showdown with three belts on the line would be another little sign of progress for their side of the sport.
The Worksop fighter is more than interested in meeting Watson.
"I'm definitely interested in the fight with Chloe. I love a challenge, and now I have won the Commonwealth title, if someone has something else to bring to the table I'm more than happy to take on the challenge." Hopewell told FightPost.
Hopewell (5-1) won the vacant Commonwealth crown when she outpointed Gemma Ruegg in Rotherham in April and is looking to return to action in September. A fight with Watson ticks many boxes. For both fighters. The winner would move on looking for world honours. Three belts potentially on the line and a possible world title opportunity to follow.
