I estimate ~360 hours of training to get from purple to brown, and around 1,300 hours of training since I started Jiu-Jitsu. It's been 2 1/3 years since I earned my purple belt. A lot has changed in that time: - I moved to a new house
- Found a new gym closer to home and
- Started a family.
Martial arts moved to a lower spot on the priority list, but is still a hobby I want to excel at. Here is what helped me keep progressing. - Cutting other things. When our son was on the way I made a list of all the things I was doing. There were several things I needed to cut. I found I can excel at 2 activities outside of work, family, and general fitness. Along those same lines...
- Align with your spouse. My wife and I talked about what identities we wanted to maintain as we were starting our family. I try not to let training interfere with family time, but it makes it 10x easier that my wife is on board with when and how long I'll be gone.
- Use the mornings. I found a gym with a 0630 class 3 mornings per week. The other mornings of the week is when I exercise general fitness. That's my time for training. Day time is either work (weekdays) or family time (weekends). Night time is family/reading time for us.
- Train your mind. An underrated training tip: review what you did the previous class in your mind on the way to the next class. This spaced repetition helps to solidify the concept in your mind and gets you in the right mindset.
- Stay in shape. If you stay in shape learning new skills is easier.
Sporting the new belt. The journey continues... | | | |
