The Washington Mystics hosted the Chicago Sky for the second time this season. These two teams met each other last week in which the Sky took the win 79-71. Since then, the Sky have lost their last two games while the Mystics got their first win of the season over the Atlanta Dream 87-68.
Elizabeth Williams is sidelined indefinitely with a meniscus injury, which occurred in the first matchup against Washington. With Williams out, Kamilla Cardoso was inserted into the starting lineup and is no longer on a minutes restriction.
Brittany Sykes made her return in the Mystics' previous after missing the last ten games due to an ankle injury. Unfortunately, she suffered another injury during the game and will be out for some time once again. Shakira Austin remained out due to rehabbing her hip injury.
Game Recap
The Mystics began the game on a 9-0 run. Chicago started 0/7 from the field, not scoring their first points of the game until the 5:46 mark. Washington led by as many as 15 points, with Aaliyah Edwards scoring 10 points and grabbing six rebounds in the quarter.
Chicago got off to a better start in the second quarter, going on a 13-2 run to cut the lead to three. Part of the reason why they got back in the game was because of their defense. They were able to force turnovers which led to easy buckets.
Washington answered with a 9-2 run to push the lead back to double digits. Despite the Sky hitting their shots, the Mystics continued to do the same and kept the lead over ten heading into halftime.
The Sky went on a 6-2 run to begin the second half. Both teams were sloppy in the third quarter due to Chicago racking up fouls and Washington turning the ball over. After getting the game within three several times, the Sky were finally able to tie the game at the 2:56 mark.
It did not last long as the Mystics closed the third quarter on a 12-3 run. They would increase their lead back to 15. Chicago did not go away, as they went on a 19-7 run to cut the lead to two. During the run, Washington went over four minutes without scoring and started racking up fouls.
Aaliyah Edwards would end up fouling out with less than two minutes left in the game. Stefanie Dolson also fouled out due to a loose ball foul, which put Marina Mabrey at the free throw with a chance to tie the game. Mabrey missed both and the Mystics pulled out the win 83-81.
Ariel Atkins led the Mystics with 29 points on 69.2% FG. Aaliyah Edwards finished with 16 points on 85.7% FG, nine rebounds, and three blocks.
Chennedy Carter led the Sky with 16 points on 66.7% FG and six rebounds. Angel Reese finished with 10 points and 14 rebounds. Dana Evans finished with 14 points, Kamilla Cardoso with 12 points, and Lindsey Allen with 10.
