Coming off an embarrassing 6-2 loss on Wednesday to the Sens, the Sabres bounced back tonight, erasing a 2-0 deficit with a 5-2 win at home against the Devils on the back of Tage Thompson's four goal night.
The Devils got on the board first, exactly three minutes into the game as Max Willman redirected a Luke Hughes shot, that hit Dahlin and then went past Levi five hole. Jersey scored again with 9:29 left in the first, with Jesper Bratt getting a quick shot short side in front to make it 2-0 Devils. Although Buffalo killed off a five on three and had a nice offensive chance in the last minute of the period, not the best first to start off this game as the Devils controlled the puck for most of the first 20 minutes and outshot us 11-8.
The Sabres got right back in it just 28 seconds into the second period, with Tage Thompson getting a nice shot past Jake Allen to make it a 2-1 game. Tommer scored his second goal of the game, the second of the period, tying the game up at 2 going top right chedd with a nice quick shot out in front on a beautiful pass from Alex Tuch. Much better period to knot up the game up.
After a great scoring chance, Tage Thompson completed the hat trick, putting the Sabres up 3-2 for our first lead of the game with 4:34 left in regulation, tipping the puck in front, and then after Jake Allen made the save on the tip, cashed in on the rebound. JJ Peterka cashed in on the empty net with 36.9 seconds to go, giving the Sabres a 4-2 lead, which pretty much locked up the win. With 5.2 seconds left in the game and the goalie still pulled, Tage Thompson gave me a fucking gift, cashing the over with his fourth goal. Fantastic end to the game.
FINAL: Sabres 5, Devils 2
Fun game tonight that was a lot closer of a game than the final score. Buffalo started off slow tonight with the 2-0 deficit in the first ten minutes that did not look great by any means, but on the back of Tage's performance we got a big win in a really fun game to watch. We outshot the Devils 36-30, out chanced them 21-19, but got slightly outplayed by an expected goal rate of 4.27-4.39. That really shows how much action there was in this game with both teams getting plenty of chances to score. I thought Levi played great in goal to keep us in it, making 28 saves on the 30 shots he faced.
PS: Thank you Tage for cashing that over for me in the closing seconds of the game.
