The Sabres played a competitive game through two periods in Edmonton tonight, but completely fell apart in the third, losing 8-3 against the Oilers.
The Sabres got on the board early as JJ Peterka scored just 1:38 into the game, pretty much completely undefended right in front. As Buffalo kept sustaining pressure on the Oilers, Rasmus Dahlin sniped the puck far side past Skinner to make it 2-0 Sabres with 7:23 left in the first period, but after a relatively quick review, it was determined offsides and the goal was taken off the board. The Sabres took the 2-0 lead for real though before the first period ended as Victor Olofsson beat Skinner on quick shot with 3:26 left in the first. Edmonton got on the board before the first ended though with Draisaitl scoring on the power play with 1:05 left in the period, with the puck getting past UPL after some good puck movement from the Oilers and UPL codlin't find the puck. Despite being outshot 17-14, I though the Sabres played really well in that first period.
Ekholm went on a two on one with Evander Kane and ripped a shot through the screen of Byram, tying the game up at 2, 4:26 into the second period. With 3:07 left in the second, Peterka scored a nice touch pass of a goal off a pass from Clifton down low, his second of the game, to get the Sabres the lead back, making it 3-2 Buffalo. Zach Hyman tied the game up again though with 47.9 seconds left in the second period, tipping the puck over UPL and into the net. Not the best period for Buffalo.
The Oilers took their first lead of the game 4:37 into the third period, as UPL lost his stick and Darnell Nurse scored five hole on him to go up 4-3. It didn't take long for them to build on that lead, and Ekholm got his second of the night to go up 5-3 with 14:20 left in regulation, on beautiful passing from Leon and Connor, where UPL couldn't do anything about it. With 4:42 left in the game, Power couldn't intercept the pass from behind the net by McDavid and Zach Hyman finished it with his second goal of the game, essentially putting the game away, with the Oilers going up 6-3. Ryan McLeod added to the lead with 3:03 left in the game on a beautiful shot to make it 7-3 Edmonton. Connor Brown finished the game, beating UPL with 9 seconds to go, and that's the game.
FINAL: Sabres 3, Oilers 8
No video. I'm shot.
Pretty pathetic third period by the Sabres to lose this one, not really doing anything offensively, and REALLY not doing anything defensively. This was a close tight game the first two periods but it really fell apart in that last 20 minutes. We got outshot 41-29 and dominated by an expected goal rate of 4.5-1.54. Just a horrible third period.
On to Calgary.
