Tonight in Alberta, the Sabres played a good defensive game, shutting down the Flames well with a pretty boring 4-1 win in Calgary, bouncing back from their pathetic 8-3 loss in Edmonton on Thursday night.
The Sabres got on the board first and just 4:53 into the game, Payton Krebs ripped a beautiful wrist shot to put the Sabres up 1-0 early. Really good period for the Sabres on both ends of the ice, controlling the puck well and limiting the chances for Calgary.
On the power play, Jonathan Huberdeau tied the game on a screened shot to make it 1-1 with 9:25 left. Pretty even, but boring second period to watch.
JJ Peterka broke the tie with 8:56 left in regulation, right in front of the net on a nice setup from behind the net by Tage Thompson, putting Buffalo back up 2-1. Tage Thompson picked up his second point of the game, scoring on the empty net from the logo with 44.2 seconds to go to close out the game. With 1.2 seconds to go, Connor Clifton scored on the empty net, with the backhanded assist behind the net from UPL from the opposite end of the ice to cap the game off for a 4-1 victory.
FINAL: Sabres 4, Flames 1
UPL was fantastic in goal, making 32 saves on the 33 shots he faced. We got outshot 33-29 but outplayed the Flames by an expected goal rate of 3.14-2.12. I though the defense did a solid job of limiting Calgary's chances all game.
Solid win to end the road trip.
