Denise Olin, 59, of Sawtelle Japantown, Los Angeles, California, United States had to make her social media accounts private recently. This was after she was filmed saying racist remarks.
In Los Angeles, it is illegal to be on common areas of private property and public property with an unleashed dog. Olin breaks this law by going in public places with her dog Wilson that is not leashed.
On February 7, 2024, a Korean-American female professional dog walker confronted Olin on Butler Avenue in Los Angeles about having an unleashed dog in public. The latter insisted dogs should not be leashed even in public.
On February 24, 2024, the same dog walker asked Olin to put Wilson on leash while they were on Butler Avenue. The former repeatedly explained it is illegal to have an unleashed dog in public in Los Angeles.
"Go back to China," Olin told the dog walker. The latter filmed the encounter and shared the video on TikTok, which immediately earned the ire of netizens not only in the U.S. but also in Ireland where Olin is originally from.
On February 29, 2024, Olin sent a text message to the Los Angeles Times explaining her side of the story. The Irish woman claimed that the Asian dog walker "said similar stuff" to her, which she did not film.
"There was no excuse for what I said," Olin said. "I'm so remorseful. I'm not a racist just stupid."
According to Olin, she has been receiving numerous death threats since the video of her racist remarks went viral. She said she is devastated.
"I'm so sorry for what I said," Olin said. "I reacted badly."
