I had a lot of hope for tonight's Sabres game, coming off our big win on Saturday night against the Isles, but we came up short tonight, losing 3-1 to the Habs as we couldn't solve Jake Allen.
Justin Barron opened the game's scoring just 2:56 into the game, giving Montreal a 1-0 lead. Comrie made initial save on WiFi's shot but then gave up a long rebound and couldn't get over quick enough, giving Barron the whole net to put the puck in. It didn't take too long though for the Sabres to tie the game up and on the power play with 12:47 left in the first period, Jeff Skinner perfectly on a beautiful shot top shelf over Jake Allen's near side shoulder just seven seconds into the PP to knot the game up at 1-1.
Pretty evenly played first period and I thought the Sabres looked pretty good as we went into the first intermission tied up at 1. We outshot the Habs 7-4 and led them by a significant margin in offensive zone possession time.
After a scoreless second period, just 3:31 into the third period, Brendan Gallagher scored the go-ahead goal to make it 2-1 Montreal on a pretty pathetic goal to give up. Comrie couldn't cover up the puck and it snuck in past him five hole. The Sabres had some solid chances to tie it up, but couldn't solve Jake Allen. Montreal took a two goal lead with 3:07 left in regulation on a Tanner Pearson power play goal and that turned out to be the final.
FINAL: Sabres 1, Canadiens 3
Lousy loss because we actually played pretty good hockey in this game. The Sabres outshot the Habs 37-26 and outplayed them by an expected goal rate of 4-3.16, but Jake Allen was just that good. Buffalo generated plenty of chances to take the lead and to win and we couldn't get the puck in the back of the net. Makes it even shittier that the game winner turned out to be the softie that Comrie couldn't cover.
Tomorrow we head to Ottawa to face the Sens, who are off to a hot start on the big night of hockey. I don't have a whole lot of hope to winning that game. Let's Go Sabres.
