Nearly 10 years after CM Punk walked out on WWE and nearly two years since his AEW debut, Tony Khan announced this afternoon Phil Brooks aka CM Punk is no longer under contract with AEW. In other words, has has been fired.
This iconic moment from 2021 certainly hasn't aged well:
...As a reminder, Punk burned his bridges with WWE when he walked out 10 years ago. Some might remember there were reports tried to talk to Triple H earlier this year at RAW backstage but Triple H had him escorted from the building. This was before Endeavor's purchase of WWE was announced, mind you.
Punk was likely looking to see if there was a way back since at the time, he was on hiatus in WWE after Punk's antics in AEW last year caused chaos. Triple H likely wanted him out because he didn't want it to look like he was trying to recruit Punk and you have to remember AEW was already accusing WWE of contract tampering since Triple H was talking to active AEW superstars whose contracts were going to expire in the near future.
All that said. AEW gave CM Punk more chances than he deserved. Especially after the backstage drama he caused at last year's All In. Just before his match at this year's All In, he apparently got into it with another superstar and the two had to be separated. AEW launched an internal investigation. The other guy was suspended and now CM Punk has been fired.
The irony is AEW firing him vindicates WWE. It proves beyond reasonable doubt CM Punk is not worth destroying locker room dynamics. I know many of his fans are holding out hope Impact would be willing to give him the chance but that's unlikely. Why? Because AEW was his last chance to prove himself and he ever said as much himself.
There is no coming back from this for CM Punk. Tony Khan bent over backwards for him but All In was clearly the breaking point. Last year, CM Punk tried to force the locker room to side with him or Chris Jericho. Anyone else likely would've been fired on the spot.
Now that he's been fired by AEW, what Triple H once said about him is once again proven true: CM Punk is a cancer to every locker room he steps into. It's more than fair to say his wrestling career is DONE. He'll be one of the three biggest names to never get a WWE Hall of Fame induction, I'll just put it like that. Who are the two? Owen Hart and Chris Benoit though of the two, Owen Hart deserves the honor.
Paul Heyman made his feelings on Benoit getting into the WWE Hall of Fame crystal clear publicly five years ago on that note. Here's what he said:
...It doesn't get any clearer than that. And I agree. If there's one wrestler who more than deserves to be erased from history, it's Chris Benoit because of what he did. His career does not change that.
As for CM Punk, good luck to him and his future endeavours =)
