NBA 2K22 for Xbox One is the "lesser" version of NBA 2K22 but its not a clone of the next gen version and its not NBA 2K21 all over again (2K13 to 2K14 was the same game after the next gen jump) but that wasn't the case here. You got the mades you're use to now in NBA, MyCareer, MyTeam, PlayNow, MyLeague and more. I mostly played MyCareer, I played a bit of MyTeam and MyLeague, the game does feature the WNBA again but its just a season mode, similar to last years where you really can't do much but play out the season and sign new players no trades and its one season thing. My goal is to review this game as its own and try not to compare it to its NextGen counter part, by saying it has thing but doesn't have this. This game reviewed on an Xbox Series X, I played during season 6 and wrote this 2 days before it ended.
Lets start to what I played the most, and that's MyCareer, but lets talk about this new "Neighborhood" thats featured, which is now a cruise ship named "Cancha del Mar". Now the ship is pretty cool, you even have a room, a really big one that even has your MyCourt, the ship itself in theory is huge, and if you have a skate bored you can skate and do tricks on one of the floors. Here's the basic lay out of the elevator, Deck 4 takes, has Promenade which is where all the stores are, and Lobby, the lobby also leads to the Rec (which again I had no interested in playing for another 2K) and a Room that you can access MyTeam from, its a cool to have MyTeam quick access from MyCareer but the loading time from that room back to the ship takes forever. You also go to the Lobby to pick up your endorsement VC from the Purser desk. Deck 8 has, Pro-Am Courts (didn't play), the Team Practice Facilities (it looks awesome in a because its in a ship) and MyCourt which is your room. Deck 14, has a Game Room (you can play mini basketball, get your daily spins and predict the outcomes of real life games for VC) and Ante-Up (didn't try). Deck 15 has Trips and Deuces (basically the MyPark area) this where I be skating too, and the Gatorade Training Facility. Deck 16 has AirBall (a court with trampolines on it) and Moat (5v5 games) there's also a zipline, that brings you from AirBall to Moat and vice versa in an 1st person view. Thats the jest of it, when it comes to Cancha del Mar.
Lets move on to MyCareer itself, you are not "MP" a YouTube star who made his fame from viral hoop videos in high school but now you begin your journey to the NBA and start taking things series but finally picking your college. The draft is back and that's always fun, I got picked 7th to the Golden State Warriors and this was the easiest season I've ever had. I said that to say, that college was hands down the hardest part because of how bad your college team mates are. I'm also certain you can't change the camera in college either and I ended up getting use to that camera. You don't have much of a story aspect, you a have a little but its not major, gone is cinematic story that gets you into the NBA, now you just have some cut scenes here and there, that give you a decision to make, some scenes with Kendrick Perkins commenting on your career and a lot of post games interviews. Some of the "story" stuff took place on your phone, but it was really just messages from you agents, I guess because it would say Diane as the contact but I def got messages from Harper and Arch (the two agents from NBA 2K21). Aside from that, the game does have "quest" but its more of just goals, you got Season quests, Career quest, Neighborhood quest, Weekly quest and Daily quest. Clearly the season, weekly and daily quest can expire.
The games itself are fun, but your team's Ai might be the worst this year, at least on defense. I play SG, but switched myself to PG and had Steph play SG, (I got into the starting line up in less than 10 games, which was a record) but once I was able to change line ups I had too because of GSW weird line up and we ran small ball, but the game for some reason didn't want to have Klay and Draymond in the lineup so I had to change it every time an injury happen or an injury healed. and it would be annoying because I wouldn't know about it until I started a new game. I got side tracked, but yes when going back on defense far too often my center would guard the pg and force me to guard the c on the other team which resulted in an easy basket for that center. Usually if you go over to guard you position, your teammate will run to guard his assignment that was not the case in this game. Pressing RB runs plays again, but I liked it better in 2K21 because they ran a lot of different ones, but I got the same like 4 plays each time this year. With all that being said its still fun, driving to the basketball felt good, getting open lanes, and breaking down your defender was top notch.
Aside from that I played some MyTeam, I did some of the solo stuff like the 3v3 that was pretty fun, and game of dominance, it was nice to able to use your MyPlayer in MyTeam and not gonna lie thats what made me want to play, even though they changed some stuff about my player, like making him 2inches taller. I tried MyGM again, those cutscenes are just so cry and boring to play, MyLeague is just same ol MyLeague, no real changes at all from past game, but its still fun, its your league do what you want really.
Overall, its a good basketball game so of course I liked it and had fun, but you can tell they didn't put as much love into this one as the other one. They didn't even bother to edit some things like Andrew Wiggins will have braids in all none gameplay related things, like how did he braid his hair so fast in the championship celebration or how did he unbraid it so fast before the game! lol. Other then that if you don't have a NextGen console this is more then fine to get.
Overall-8.9
