Teacher trainees gave the government a three-week deadline

The Ghanaian Teacher Trainees Association has given the government a three-week deadline to pay all owed allowances for the previous six months.

The Association has petitioned the Education Minister and Director General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to look into the situation, according to a statement issued by President Dembie Abdul-Manan and General Secretary Abaidoo Felix.

The Association also stated that it will take all necessary efforts to ensure that the government honors its promise to trainee teachers made prior to the 2016 elections.

The restoration of the allowance has long been praised by Ghana's state colleges of education for the tremendous relief it provides trainees.

However, it was noted that for the previous six months, teacher trainees in all 46 colleges of education had not been paid their allowances.

According to the statement, the Association's leadership has met with the Minister of Education, the Director General of GTEC, and the CEO of the Student Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) on multiple occasions to demand early payment of the Teacher Trainees' allowance, but to no avail.

As a result, the Association expressed concern over members' suffering as a result of non-payment of allowances.

"It is worth noting that most trainees rely on the allowance to pay their school and examination costs, as a result of the delay in its payment, some trainees did not sit for the end of semester examination across several Colleges," according to the statement.

"The Principals of Colleges of Education feed trainees from this same budget, and the delay in payment of the money has forced them to borrow constantly."

These are the grounds, according to the Ghanaian Teacher Trainees Association, for issuing a three-week ultimatum to the government to pay members their six-month allowances.
