Ekwow Spio-Garbrah sues Chairman Wontumi

Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, a former Minister of Trade and Industry, has sued the governing New Patriotic Party's (NPPAshanti )'s Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, for defamation.

Mr. Spio-Garbrah is pursuing legal action after Mr. Wontumi allegedly labelled him a thief on a live television appearance in September 2020.

Mr. Wontumi (1st defendant) called the plaintiff a thief on a political show on a TV owned by him on Thursday, September 10, 2020, according to the writ obtained by citinewsroom.com.

Mr. Wontumi said in the writ: "All Inusah Fuseini is stating is that even he, Inusah Fuseini, is a thief." Spio-Garbrah is a thief, Sylvester Mensah is a thief, Johsua Alabi is a thief, all their Presidential candidates are thieves, so if John Mahama is a thief, let him continue stealing."

It's still unclear what was discussed on the TV show that prompted Wontumi's alleged remarks.

"The plaintiff claims that the defendant uttered the defamatory comments carelessly and maliciously with the objective to harm and injure the plaintiff's hard-earned global reputation."

The Plaintiff estimates the worth of his global reputation to be in excess of 10 million dollars, thus his demand for compensation in that amount.

"General damages in an amount equal to the Plaintiff's global reputational value as stated in paragraph 10 of the Statement of Claim."
