On Wednesday, the Los Angeles Dodgers (106-46) and St. Louis Cardinals (90-72) met for the NL Wild-Card Game at Dodger Stadium in LA.

The winner would go on to face the San Francisco Giants in the NLDS. While the losers season would be over.

Veteran Adam Wainwright (17-7, 3.05 ERA) would take the mound for the Cardinals. The Dodgers also went with a veteran, Max Scherzer (7-0, 1.98 ERA since being traded to Dodgers in July).

Vets Shine on Mound

The NL Wild-Card game could not have got off to a better start for the Cardinals.

Tommy Edman led the game off with a single into right field. Edman would steal second and would later advance to third off a sacrifice fly. He would cross home thanks to a wild pitch from Scherzer.

That was all the offense the Cardinals would get in the first. It was all the offense in this game early on as both of the veteran pitchers looked sharp.

The Dodgers looked to have a chance to put some runs across in the third. Trae Turner came up to bat with the bases loaded. After working a full count, Wainwright got Trae Turner to hit into a double play to end the inning and preserve the 1-0 lead for the Cardinals.

After Scherzer sat the Cardinals down in the top half, the Dodgers looked to pounce again in the bottom half of the fourth.

Justin Turner led the bottom of the fourth off with a solo home run to give tie the game at 1-1. That would be all the damage the Dodgers would do in the fourth.

The Cardinals seemed to have life in the fifth as the first two batters got on base, but after Scherzer struck out Tyler O'Neil, he was pulled from the game.

He pitched 4.1 innings, allowed 3 hits, 1 run, walked 3, and struck out 4 on 94 pitches. The high pitch count was likely the reason Scherzer was pulled.

Former Cardinal Joe Kelly then got 2 quick outs to end the inning.

After a 1-2-3 fifth inning, Wainwright would be pulled after giving up a 1-out single to Trae Turner. He pitched 5.1 innings, allowed 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 5 on 95 pitches.

Postseason Dramatics

The bullpens followed in the footsteps of the starters. Hits and runs were hard to come by in the late innings of this game.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Dodgers seemed to have a chance with Trae Turner on first. After Justin Turner struck out, Will Smith hit what seemed to be a base hit to center, but shortstop Paul DeJong was able to show off his vertical and get the inning-ending catch.

Edman was able to single and even steal second, but the Cardinals were not able to push across a run in the ninth.

TJ McFarland sat down the first two Dodger batters he faced before walking Cody Bellinger in the bottom of the ninth. McFarland would then be replaced by Alex Reyes.

Reyes would face Chris Taylor. After Bellinger stole second, Taylor launched a homer to deep left field to walk this one off and send the Dodgers to the NLDS. The 3-1 win sets them up for an NLDS matchup against their division rival Giants.

A great game with a great ending. There truly is nothing like postseason baseball.

The Wrap Up

Both teams left it all on the field.

Justin Turner and Chris Taylor both hit homers in the win for the Dodgers.

Tommy Edman was great for the Cardinals in the loss as he went 3-5 with 2 stolen bases. He became just the third player to ever have multiple hits and stolen bases in a winner-take-all postseason game. He joined Lou Brock and Pepper Martin, Martin and Brock also did it for the Cardinals.

The Cardinal's great September run was not enough to get them to the NLDS. Their season comes to an end with the loss to the Dodgers.

They went 0-11 with runners in scoring position and failed to score another run after the first inning. Hard to win games like that.

The Dodgers move on to the NLDS. They will take on their rival Giants, Game 1 will be played in San Francisco on Friday.
