With 5 stages to go, time was running out for Roglic if he was to win his 3rd straight Vuelta. He crushed all doubts about his championship credentials with a victory on the summit of Lagos de Cavodonga. Egan Bernal had went for broke with about 60km to go and looked a shoe in for the victory but Primoz dug deep to drop him with 12 to go. The win means Roglic ominously takes over the Red jersey at such a crucial stage of the race. Odd Christian Eiking had a nightmare stage 17 although he recovered to finish nine minutes behind Primoz. As a result he falls away in the GC with Enric Mas the nearest challenger to Roglic about 2 minutes 22 behind followed by Lopez a further 3 minutes and 11 seconds. Primoz's no holds barred tactic of chasing after Bernal when it was sensible to hold back for his team do challenge him, paid off handsomely. He is one rider who knows his strengths. Rain made the task even that much harder. The curves needed extra care to time them as well as reduce speed under what normally riders would do in dry conditions. On the plus the reduction of temperatures was a well come sight. Check out how well the rider in the clip on 2:21 minutes did on the curve, not going too far left or right , not leaning too hard to the left, great example of managing the curve under wet conditions.
