Andre Pierre Gignac is now the leading goal scorer in the Olympics soccer tournament after a hat trick against South Africa in the most entertaining match of Tokyo 2020 thus far. A surprise inclusion by the French selectors, the now Mexican based former Marseille man proved he is by no means finished as a soccer player with 3 well taken goals to add to the one he got against Mexico in the first match. South Africa will be kicking themselves having GONE INTO THE LEAD THREE TIMES only to lose it at the death, a confidence busting 93rd minute winner by France. Ama Glug glug as South Africa is affectionately known had a penalty miss by Singh too in the first half which could have gone a long way to secure at least a point had it gone in. Now SA is out of the running for the quarter finals with a game to spare. Both teams defended pretty poorly in this match.
French right winger Michelin had an excellent game together with Angers goalkeeper Benardoni(who looks older than the stipulated 24 years but hey looks can be deceiving right). For SA Ngcobo, Kodisang(who won the penalty) and Makgopa were the most exciting players attack wise, they showed no fear and took the game to the French. Perhaps that was their undoing, a little pragmatism by their team wouldn't have hurt. Despite having a great match Benardoni wasn't immune to the odd moment of madness. Check out the first goal by Kodisang, the French keeper came out of his line and saw and didn't conquer. But the threat from Gignac loomed large the entire match. His best goal for me was the header to equalize at 2-2 using all his experience, check it out. He knew that the defenders would be drawn towards the line by the Michelin's run on the right so he waited and was patient knowing the cross will come. Classic forward's play. The goal of the match was scored by South Africa's Mokoena. 80 minutes on the clock, heads never went down and a cracker from outside the box just rewards for that. French defense in sixes.
SA heads finally did go down after the French injury time winner. Not before Williams had his own moment of madness for AmaGlug Glug. I strongly believe the Supersport goalminder cost his team here, if he didn't concede that penalty , no pressure on his team , they close out the game comfortably. South africa have a game versus Mexico to play for pride on Wednesday with France needing to beat the host nation Japan to book place in last eight.
