Flood Watches Drench Ohio's Holiday Weekend

Flood watches covering central and southeastern Ohio, including Columbus and Cincinnati, has put millions of Ohioans on alert as heavy rain swept through the state to open Memorial Day weekend.

The National Weather Service in Wilmington issued watches for Franklin, Licking, Pickaway, Fairfield, and Fayette counties, with saturated ground raising the risk of flash flooding. Parts of southeastern Ohio, northern Kentucky, and southern Indiana fell under watches as well, with some areas facing up to three inches of rain.

Taste of Cincinnati shut down two hours early Friday night as heavy rain moved through the city, closing at 9 p.m. instead of 11 p.m. The event reopened Saturday morning an hour ahead of schedule, though showers and thunderstorms continued through the afternoon.

Columbus faces an 80% chance of rain today, with thunderstorms possible after 2 p.m. The NWS advises Ohioans to stay out of floodwaters, with conditions expected to improve by Monday.

Ohio Limits Survivors to One Year

Ohio gives adult sexual assault survivors just one year to file a civil lawsuit, which is among the shortest windows in the country, but a bipartisan bill now before the state Senate would extend that window to five years.

Senate Bill 421, sponsored by Sen. Nickie Antonio (D-Lakewood) and Sen. Nathan Manning (R-North Ridgeville), received a hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee this week. Emily Gemar, the Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Violence's director of public policy, testified that the one-year limit forces survivors to act before many are emotionally prepared.

Gemar told the committee that trauma affects every person differently, and Ohio's laws should reflect that reality. The bill targets offenses under Chapter 2907 of the Ohio Revised Code, including rape and sexual battery.

Smith Named Nation's Best College Player

Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith has been ranked the nation's top college football player by On3 in their preseason top-100 list heading into 2026.

The Buckeyes' 6-foot-3, 223-pound junior posted 87 catches for 1,243 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2025, earning first-team All-American recognition for the second straight year.

Smith enters his third season with 2,558 career receiving yards and 27 touchdowns, and he's the fastest Buckeye ever to reach 1,500 receiving yards.

On3 writer Clark Brooks called Smith “a clear star” who has “dazzled fans and frazzled defensive backs” since arriving in Columbus. He’s also a leading Heisman contender, with the Buckeyes’ season opener less than 100 days away on Aug. 27.
